Staines 3 (Sajeed Ali, Richard Cardigan 2) Oxford University 3

Another disappointing result for the Blues on Saturday.

Staines did not start the game strongly and Oxford university scored first to take an early advantage.

Both sides then had a succession of short corners but neither could convert.

At half-time the score remained 1-0 and, with neither side dominating, it was always going to be a competitive second half.

It was Staines who began that second half the strongest, and they finally started to take control of the game.

A blunder from the Oxford defence, resulted in Richard Cardigan dispossessing the Oxford sweeper and then converting from close-range - a real poacher's effort.

Staines then threatened to run riot as within two minutes they had scored their second, a flowing move from left-back, saw a succession of passes that destroyed the Oxford defence, for Cardigan to score his second.

Sajeed Ali then made it 3-1 from the penalty stroke and was unlucky not to make it 4-1 within 10 minutes, when he had a goal disallowed.

This would have almost guaranteed the Blues three points, but instead gave Oxford hope and proved a catalyst to the Staines's demise.

Staines were unable to sustain the pressure they had exerted in the first 15 minutes of the second half and basic errors allowed Oxford back into the fixture.

Oxford were clinical from their short corners and scored twice late in the second half to bring the scores level, and take a point from the fixture.

Staines were disappointed with the result, but only have themselves to blame for a sub standard performance against a weaker opposition.

Staines face Lewes away this Saturday where they hope to return to winning ways.
