Herne Hill Harrier Keith Newton went to the East Surrey League cross country in Lloyd Park in a aggrieved frame of mind after being told he was no longer a member of the English team in the home country's cross event. This was despite being in the winning squad for the previous four years. He simply took a reasonable field of Senior runners apart to record a 90m victory and lead his team to the first victory of the winter season. Paul Stevens had another cracker of a run with a trademark move through the field in the second 2.5-mile lap to finish a close up fourth. Backing came from new signings Iain Yates and Andrew Aitken in seventh and ninth spots. Herne Hill's leading woman, Helen Carter was third.
Meanwhile, Vic Maughn won a 10k race in Beddington Park and Michael Cummings had a come-back run over 5k on Wimbledon Common where he as third in 15min 50sec.
Herne Hill also took fifty children to first of the Winter's Sports Hall competitions at Guildford.
