Hercules Wimbledon's double British Masters champion Geoff Walcott is challenging for world honours when he competes in the World Masters track and field championships which started in Riccione, Italy, on Tuesday.

Walcott, the British over-55 200m and 400m champions, has high hopes of getting among the medals when he competes among the best in the world. He holds the British over 55 400m record with 53.81 seconds at Tooting in July. His record breaking run showed he is returning to his best form.

Before flying out to Italy this week, Walcott, a member of British medal-winning relay teams at World indoor and outdoor championships, admitted: "I've still got a few twinges but once I start competing I'm quite sure they won't cause any problems."

As a precaution he decided to miss the Veterans Athletic club championships at Kingsmeadow where several of Hercules Wimbledon's more seasoned athletes managed to come away with a handful of medals.
