Carshalton sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeety has helped Great Britain win gold at the European Athletics Championships in Germany.

He anchored the 4x100m relay squad of Adam Gemili, Chijindu “CJ” Ujah, and Zharnel Hughes to a winning time of 37.8 seconds in Berlin on August 12.

The 29-year-old, a former BBC Young Sports Personality of Year award winner, gained first place ahead of sprinters from Turkey and the Netherlands - who finished second and third respectively.

In an Instagram post, he said: “Wow, what a feeling! We did it, European Championships!”

Then, in a second post, he added: “One team! One nation! One family! 4x100m, still buzzing.”

Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake was also part of the Great Britain team during the event, with the 24-year-old picking up silver during the 200m.

This is Aikines-Aryeety's second gold medal at the European Athletics Championships after claiming gold during the 2014 edition in Zürich, Switzerland.

Gemili, who used to attend Dartford Grammar School, was also in that squad and achieved a winning time of 37.93 seconds.
