Croydon's James Ellington will jet to Rio in a confident, but calm, mood after he helped Great Britain clock the fastest time of the year in the men’s 4x100m sprint.

Running with the GB A team, Eliington, with Croydon Harrier James Dasaolu, Adam Gemili and CJ Ujah, clocked 37.78 seconds at the Muller Anniversary Games last weekend.

They pipped the GB B team, featuring Sutton & District AC's Harry Aikines Aryeetey, by a hair's breadth as they took second in 37.81secs.

Ellington, 30, who ran the third leg before handing over to anchor man Ujah, believes Friday’s breath-taking performance has sent a strong message to their gold medal rivals in Rio.

He said: “Our running is doing the talking. We’re not going to get over confident and start talking about were going there and we’re gonna to do this and that.

“We’re capable of doing that and as long as we stay focused on what we’ve been doing all year there’s no reason why we shouldn’t go there and be contending for medals.

“This was the last competition before Rio. To leave this track on a high puts us in a wicked path to go into the games.

“We’ve got two amazing teams that ran under 37 so we’re exciting.”

And Dasaolu, 28, added: “If we ran that sort of times in the Olympics we’ll be pushing for a medal.

“The guys got gold in 2004 running slower than that so we just need to keep our heads, continue practising, stay disciplined in our practise and get the baton round which is important, so definitely we have a chance.”
