Kingston's Anthony Ayinde cemented his position as a Queensbury welterweight champion on Saturday night, after edging out title challenger Jon Martin to retain his champion status.
Defending his Queensbury Boxing League regional welterweight crown for the second time against Bournemouth’s talented Jon Martin, the champion was made to work throughout an intriguing battle that saw both men find success.
But at the end of the contest it was Ayinde who was the one celebrating after being declared the winner by a majority points decision.
Talking to Eurosport after the decision had been confirmed Ayinde said: “I said in the build up I’d still be the champion after this fight and I’ve proved that I’m one of the best out there now.
“There was a lot of talk on social media about this fight and what Jon Martin was going to do to me, but even though that was a majority decision I felt I won nearly every round.
“Jon Martin was a good fighter and he did catch me with a few shots, but I felt my jab was the key and my workrate was much higher than his and I threw a lot more punches.”
After retaining his title Ayinde was quick to turn his focus to the next challenge and was bold in his prediction on more title success.
“ I said when I joined the league I was coming to take all the belts in this division,” he added.
“Next up I’m moving on to the national title and I hear Danny Stalford wants a second shot at me, so I’m happy to beat him up again and bring that national belt home."
Ayinde’s latest title victory will be shown on British Eurosport in July as part of the league’s big summer boxing schedule on the channel.
