Phil Wicks' dreams of qualifying for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio came to an abrupt halt on Sunday.

The Cobham-based runner pulled out of the London marathon after 22 miles ended any hopes of crossing the Atlantic in the summer.

Wicks, who runs with Belgrave Harriers, went into the 26.2 mile London race on the back of Maidenhead Easter 10 Miler victory last month.

The 32-year-old, who grew up in Worcester Park, said: "It was a difficult day for me.

“Unfortunately I've missed too much training since Christmas.

"While everything was going well through half-way, I just didn't have it in my legs and had to make the difficult decision to stop at 22 miles."

He added: “I am absolutely gutted, but today was a massive gamble which unfortunately didn't pay off.”

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge retained his men's title in two hours three minutes four seconds - just seven seconds outside the world record.
