Ricky Boylan returned to winning ways in the ring on Saturday by forgetting the fancy stuff and sticking to the boxing.
The 27-year-old super-lightweight (14-3-0) from Carshalton beat Poland’s Lukasz Janik (28-3-0) over six rounds at the SSE Arena in Wembley on a 60-55 points decision.
Boylan is now training back in south London under the co-guidance of Alan Smith and Eddie Lam at Bromley-based iBox Gym.
And after defeats in three of his previous four outings, Boylan was just pleased to be back to winning ways.
The former Earlsfield ABC man said: “I knew Lukasz Janik was a really tough guy, but Alan just kept telling me don’t get involved with him, just stick to the jab and stick to the boxing.
“As hard as it was for me not to get involved, because I wanted to, I felt sometimes I wasn’t working enough, but I thought I did enough to win the rounds.”
“No disrespect, but he [Janik] was not the most skilful opponent, but he’s one hell of a tough man and believe me, his head is the hardest head I’ve ever hit in my life.”
Boylan felt he had a point to prove to his ring critics on Saturday night following his recent high profile defeats, in particular against Tyler Goodjohn, Tommy Martin and bitter local rival from nearby Hackbridge Danny ‘Cassius Connor’ that saw him tumble down the domestic super-lightweight rankings.
The former Southern Area champ said: “I was happy because I think I neglected my boxing a little bit in my previous fights and I just wanted to show some people I can box and I’ve got good jab and I think I showed that tonight.
“Hopefully my promoter can get me back in the ring as early as May, because I want another shot at a domestic title.
“But for now it’s just nice to be back to winning ways and I want to keep working on things one step at a time.”
