Two members of Claygate-based Foley Boxing Club progressed to the finals of the Southern Counties novice championship with victories at Canterbury on Saturday.

Lauren Gavin earned an unanimous points decision over T Brooker of Tunbridge Wells ABC in the under 69 kilos semi-final over four rounds.

Gavin was sharp from the first bell, scoring with straight punches and thunderous hooks to the head and body.

In the remaining rounds Gavin picked his man off with an exemplary display of technical boxing and ran out a clear winner.

Then Foley's Steve Ellis stopped A Ruffalo of Horsham ABC in the under 64 kilos semi-final to gain revenge for a recent defeat by Ruffalo on the Horsham boy's own club show.

Ellis was the much more aggressive boxer, hurting Ruffalo with his right lead and left hooks to the head.

Ellis's power told in the third round and a straight right saw the doctor halt the fight while blood was wiped from Ruffalo's nose.

A flurry of powerful punches resulted in the referee stopping the fight, leaving Ellis and his coaches Paul Dawson and Gary Ball elated.

The finals are this Friday at Canterbury University where Lauren Gavin takes on Aaron Lowery from Canterbury ABC, and Steve Ellis faces Perkins of Cooper Boys ABC.

Another interesting final sees Adam Cracknell from Woking ABC meet Shane McGuigan, the son of former World Champion Barry McGuigan.
