London Scottish head coach Terry O'Connor has paid tribute to former chief Rowly Williams, claiming promotion will be a result of his legacy.

The Exiles stand on the brink of National Division Three South rugby - seven years after dropping out of the Premiership.

They now need just two points from their remaining two games, and could seal the London League One title with victory over Athletic Ground co-tenants Richmond next week.

Williams left the club in 2006 after narrowly missing promotion for the second successive year, with director of rugby Malcolm Gillespie citing a need for change ahead of O'Connor's appointment.

And the former Rosslyn Park coach, elevated after two seasons at the helm of the Scottish second string, stands on the brink of achieving in his first season in charge what Williams couldn't deliver.

"We have had a bit of luck with injuries and picked up the odd player through the season who have made a difference," he said. "But the squad is largely the same as the one Rowly put in place and the foundations he laid down have stood us in good stead."

Scottish have lost just twice all season, while their try-scoring exploits - including two 100-point triumphs over Guildford - sees them just 56 points shy of the 1,000-point mark.

They beat Bishop's Stortford 69-5 in their last match at home a fortnight ago.

The cutting edge has largely been found in midfield through centre Bryan Milne, who scored a hat-trick of tries at the weekend, and fly-half Stuart Peel, the league's joint leading try scorer.

Scottish dropped down eight divisions when a disastrous flirtation with professionalism saw the club go bust and reform as an amateur outfit in 1999.
