What a week for Hercules Wimbledon teenager Amelia Richards! She was voted Wandsworth's young athlete of the year for an outstanding 2006 and the top Surrey girls U15 performer for her efforts at the county's indoor championships at Sutton earlier this month.

But in the England Athletics girls U15 indoor pentathlon championship at Manchester on Saturday, her final indoor championship of the winter, things went horribly wrong in the 60m hurdles.

Amelia, 14, the South of England champion at the event, reached the first hurdle too close and shuddered to a halt. She walked away and gained no points in the first of the five disciplines - her medal hopes shattered.

At least she achieved a personal best of 8.25 metres in the shot.

It was a testing week for Amelia. Her father had to go into hospital and a girl from her school, Graveney, Tooting, was tragically killed when struck by a bus.
