Merton pulled off a remarkable last gasp 41-38 home victory on Saturday over Surrey Three side Reigate in a topsy-turvy encounter.

They were inspired by skipper Garth Hume and Bryce Lund, who dragged himself out of his sick bed.

Reigate stormed into a 12-0 lead, but Merton levelled by also getting two tries and a conversion thanks to Tom Wood touching down twice and teenager Frankie Murray kicking an extra two points.

A penalty by Murray put Merton ahead and early in the second-half tries followed from Kerryn James and Dan Somerset, celebrating his full first team debut. Murray's conversions made it 29-12.

After Reigate had replied with a brace of tries, Jimmy McLoughlin snatched his fourth touch down of the season. Undeterred, Reigate went over twice more, the second a contentious score under the sticks, to move into the lead.

But in the final minute James plunged over to secure the winning touchdown.

This Saturday, Merton have a friendly at home to Esher. New players are welcome to attend training on Wednesdays at 7.3pm at Morden Recreation Ground. For details call Jack on 07970 166958.
