Former England captain Joe Johnston broke his scoring record for a season by notching four goals in Streatham Redskins' 7-4 victory at Basingstoke Buffalo last weekend.

Redskins legend Johnston, 26, first played for the club at the tender age of 13 alongside his Uncle Jimmy before going on to play for Guildford Flames and the national side.

But he had never reached the 20-goal mark in a season before - and now he has achieved it before Christmas.

The hard-earned victory was also a landmark for the team as, with 12 wins on the spin, the Redskins are the only senior hockey team in the Elite, Premier and English National Leagues with a 100 per cent record.

"We were slow to get going and lost concentration towards the end of the game, but we came away with the points and saw off another good team." said Johnston.

"I can't remember how long ago it was since the Redskins have had a run of 12 victories.

"Twenty goals is more than I have ever scored for the senior team in a season and there's still some way to go!"

Redskins completed the double over Basingstoke despite a spirited comeback from the home side.

Buffalo scored first, but five goals without reply from Robert Blazowski (two), Barry Spours and Johnston (two) put Redskins firmly in control at the start of the third period.

However, with 12 minutes to go the home side suddenly got into gear and scored three excellent goals in a six-minute period.

Fortunately, Johnston restored a two-goal cushion shortly after. Basingstoke withdrew their keeper in a desperate attempt to salvage something from the game, but Johnston completed the scoring by firing into the empty net in the final minute.

"Basingstoke's early goal meant we were on the back foot from the beginning," said Streatham head coach Dean Birrell.

"Everyone stuck to their guns and the goals started to come.

"But we eased off. We have got to learn to kill off the opposition from that position, but we are still learning as a team and there is some way to go.

"Last season we lost both of our league games to Basingstoke, so this is progress!"
