Rookie Theo Etienne is officially the top teenage sprinter in Surrey after the Hercules Wimbledon star won two gold medals at the Surrey County Championships.

Etienne, 16, who was making his debut in the county meeting, first tackled the men’s U17s 200m on Saturday, winning in 22.93 seconds. It was only the fourth time Etienne had raced over 200m.

He returned on Sunday in the men’s U17s 100m, rising to the challenge to see off his rivals and snatch an impressive victory in 11.12.

It also meant Etienne kept the 100m title in the club after it was won by club-mate Max Mondelli last year. Meanwhile, there were a further six gold medals for Hercules from the two-day meeting.

Youngest of the six Hercules Wimbledon winners was Matthew Gibbons, who showed an impressive improvement to win the boys’ U15s 3,000m title in 10:10.31.

The youngster took 70 seconds off his previous best over the distance, set when finishing fifth in the Surrey Championships in 2012. He beat a seven-strong field and was 15 seconds clear of the runner-up.
