It was a tale of two substitutes at Kingsmeadow on Saturday as Kingstonian grabbed their second win a week with a 90th minute winner courtesy of defender Gary MacDonald.

The pre-match talk revolved around Bobby Traynor being dropped to the bench, where he was alongside club captain Gary MacDonald.

Despite it being a surprise, it was an explainable one as Traynor’s recent form has left a lot to be desired and Aaron Goode more than ably deputised for MacDonald in Ks’ 2-1 win over Tooting.

Manager Alan Downson said post-match, that both men came into the game carrying a few knocks, and that not too much should be read into the side he selected.

“In the past we’ve relied a lot on Bobby, and we will do again,” he said.

“They’re two great players who’ll be here for the next couple of years.”

In fact MacDonald was only on the pitch to grab the winner as Goode had picked up a hamstring injury, which ruined another solid performance from Goode, who Dowson described as his side's best player.

MacDonald joined the action alongside Traynor with 25 minutes to go in an endeavour to grab the win after a frustrating first half where the visiting keeper Will Viner was on form to deny Simon Huckle and Tom Hutchinson.

Chances came for Kingstonian late on, but once MacDonald’s header was cleared off the line and Bashiru Alimi’s header came back off the back it looked like they would settle for a point.

However, a bouncing ball in the Harrow area was kept alive by Ian Gayle and Hutchinson and eventually fell to MacDonald.

With one touch to control it, his second was perfectly placed, into the far corner, past the despairing dive of both keeper and defender, to send his side and the home crowd into the kind of rapture that only a last minute winner can produce.

For Harrow, the game was overshadowed by a broken leg suffered by midfielder Evandro Delgado.

While Dowson, he still refused to be drawn into calling for a promotion push, but did acknowledge he had sent out a valuable message.

“It’s good to put a point across that we don’t rely too much on one individual,” he added
