Hampton & Richmond Borough loan star Joel Ledgister has insisted he is not the Beavers’ Blue Square South saviour.

The staunch Christian netted a spectacular debut brace as boss Mark Harper’s men came from behind to beat Eastbourne Borough 3-1 and move off the foot of the table on Saturday.

But far from taking the plaudits, the Sutton United striker – on-loan at the Beveree until January – reckons the whole team are the real heroes.

And 24-year-old says it is down to them all to pull the Station Road outfit out of the relegation mire, starting by backing up Saturday’s win with three points at Dorchester tomorrow.

“I hadn’t really thought about scoring on my debut. It was great, but I’m not going to say it was just down to my goals. I’m not going to say I can make the difference,” he said.

“We were 1-0 down on Saturday and the manager made two crucial substitutions and that made the difference. He has to take massive credit.

“Everyone made the difference on Saturday and if we can start at Dorchester the way we finished against Eastbourne, we should be all right.

“Saturday’s win and my goals will be forgotten, if we don’t get three points. “I’ll take a 1-0 win with Dave Tarpey scoring any day. It is all about focusing on the next game.”

Ledgister’s heroics ended Hampton’s five-match winless streak, but with Harper identifying the next six games as crucial to survival hopes, fans will hope it is not a false dawn.

Sutton boss Paul Doswell, who insists the striker is very much part of his Gander Green Lane plans, has ordered his man is played through the middle rather than in his more familiar position out wide.

He retains an immediate recall option on the former Carshalton Athletic forward and if Ledgister’s form continues he could return to Sutton sooner rather than later.

“I only signed for Sutton five weeks ago but then I got injured and was sitting on the bench,” added Ledgister.

“Paul said that was a waste of my time and this move is for my benefit.

“He was the first to congratulate by text afterwards, so I know he is watching and if I am recalled it is because there have been good reports about me.

“I’ve got two things to work for. To help Hampton and to get back into the Sutton team.

“I’m just going to do my best and see what happens.”
