Former AFC Wimbledon and Carshalton Athletic midfielder Karl Beckford has backed Mark Beard to prove a big hit at Imperial Fields after the 35-year-old was unveiled as new Tooting & Mitcham boss last week.

Beckford is one of a host of names linked with a possible summer move to the Terrors as they look to rebuild after Billy Smith’s departure.

And the midfielder, who played alongside Beard at both Stevenage Borough and the Dons, reckons Tooting are on to a winner.

Beckford said: “I think it is a great move and I think Mark will do a good job.

“As a player he was very determined and he expected that of everybody else.

“He got what he wanted on the pitch.

“If he can translate that playing success to his managerial career then he will be very successful.

“I know people are talking about his lack of experience but Mark is incredibly focused and he has a great football pedigree.”

Beckford was named as one of a trio of players being tracked by the Terrors, alongside Hasim Dean and Marcel McKie.

But the 24-year-old, who ended last season with Blue Square South side Hampton & Richmond, insists a move to the Ryman Premier side is far from a done deal.

Beckford added: “I have had a conversation with Tooting but nothing more than that.

“I am in talks with a few clubs and just considering my options at the moment.

“I am not really in any sort of rush and I am just looking for the best deal.

“It is not really a case of money, it is more about how a team wants to play and if they are moving forward.

“Tooting have a pretty good reputation and if things work out that way I would be happy to be there.”
