Kingstonian fell at the very last fence to a well-organized Boreham Wood side in their brave attempt to achieve promotion to the Conference South at the first attempt.

After their disastrous start to the season, in which they lost their first four games, the Ks management team of Alan Dowson, Mark Hams and Martin Tyler hauled their charges back into contention with some superb attacking football.

Despite yesterday's result, they can still be proud of their efforts in the Ryman Premier League this season, having only won promotion last summer.

Ks started both halves well in an attacking frame of mind and Luke l'Anson was unlucky not to put his side up early on.

But Ks fell to a Wood set piece with just twenty minutes to go and then striker Dewayne Clarke extinguished any lingering hopes of a fightback with a wonder goal with a minute remaining.

There was also controversy in the second half when a home fan ran onto the pitch to remonstrate with Ks skipper Francis Duku in what could have been an unpleasant incident.

Fortunately, the impressive referee Mr Knowles took control and the young man involved was escorted from the stadium.

Ks had the serious serious attack after five minutes when Luke Hickie's through ball caught the Wood backline cold, setting Christian Jolley free into the away box, but although he lobbed keeper Tony Tucker the ball looped just over.

Four minutes later, Ks went close again when a Matt Gray corner from the right found an unmarked Luke l'Anson deep in the Wood box.

He had time to pick his spot but his header, which looked goalbound, was headed off the line by Wood midfielder Lee Allinson

Wood replied with a Chris Watters free-kick from the right which found centre back Ryan Moran but he headed wide of the near post.

Then Gray, from the left, floated a free-kick out.

The tempo of the game slackened as both sides cancelled one another out.

The game even drew to a halt when Ks midfielder Simon Huckle took a knock and was struggling to continue.

With six minutes to the break, Allinson's free-kick rom the right found Moran again but his powerful header from close range was pushed away for a corner by an alert and full-stretch Rob Tolfrey.

Then, with a minute to the break, Watters' through ball found pacy striker Claude Seanla deep in the Ks box but he was overstretched and Tolfrey took the opportunity to mop up.

Then Allinson set up Watters on the edge of the Ks box but his first-time effort sailed over.

The second half started with a l'Anson low cross into the Wood box that found striker Bobby Traynor close-in but his shot was blocked.

Hickie was first to the loose ball but his well-struck rising drive from the edge of the home box was pushed out impressively by a full-stretch Tucker.

After 54 minutes, Gray's corner from the right fell to l'Anson beyond the far post.

He turned the ball back into the Wood goalmouth where an aerial challenge by Duku and Tucker saw the Ks skipper poke the ball home but a push was spotted on the home keeper.

As the referee sported out the situation on came the Wood supporter to make an unexpected but very brief appearance.

The tight and tense encounter continued with both backlines in domineering form until the 69th minute when a crack appeared. The impressive Allinson curled in a free-kick from the left finding RYAN MORAN on the far post and, with Tolfrey at full-stretch, he nodded the ball home from close quarters.

Then Wood winger and skipper Mario Noto launched a 25-yarder with some power which was tipped away by a diving Tolfrey.

With ten minutes to go Gray thundered in a low free-kick from just outside the away box but Tucker again made an important block on his line.

Sub Dean Lodge then found striker Carl Wilson-Denis inside the Wood box but Tucker smothered his drive.

Defender Jon Clements took off down the right with the K's backline stretched.

He whipped the ball back to Allinson who shot across the face of the K's goalmouth.

With a minute remaining Wood striker DEWAYNE CLARKE way out on the right flank unleashed a rocket of shot that sailed high into the far corner of the Ks goal past a full-stretch Tolfrey to ensure Conference South football next season.

There was four minutes of additional time but the Ks' exciting season ended with Jolley's cross from the left being pulled out of the air by a confident Tucker.
