Carshalton finished their season on a resounding high with the demolition of a Wealdstone side for whom this proved to be just one game too many in their stamina-sapping pursuit of a play-off place.

All of the goals came in the first half hour when the striking combination of Byron Harrison and Richard Jolly finally realised its undoubted potential to ensure that the Robins preserved their Premier Division status at the end of what turned out to be a demanding season in so many respects on and off the field.

Whilst Wealdstone will feel aggrieved at the demanding schedule of games over the past few weeks, the Robins had a job to do and did it in style with some good attacking play and, in the first half when it mattered most, a demonstration of how to make the most of scoring opportunities when they come along.

As expected Wealdstone pressed forward from the kick-off, but Carshalton were rarely troubled. Chris O’Leary made a smart interception in midfield and broke forward for the home team only to hit his low shot wide of the far post.

Play switched to the opposite end with Pico Gomez winning a free kick just outside the Wealdstone area and Richard Jolly’s free kick proved too hot to hold for keeper Sean Thomas.

The resulting corner was taken by Rob Watkins and, when the ball took a deflection, Byron Harrison was perfectly placed to head home and put Carshalton ahead on 6 minutes.

Full back Lee Chappell was a threat for Wealdstone with some well flighted crosses from the left, but Nic Hamann was usually in the right place to claim the ball.

Wealdstone were stunned on 19 minutes when the Robins increased their lead. Some excellent passing ended with Jolly pulling the ball back to Harrison who scored with a right foot drive high into the roof of the net.

Three minutes later it just got better when a long ball upfield was headed on by Harrison to Richard Jolly who took the ball on before driving his shot past Thomas for the third.

Wealdstone were given a glimmer of hope on 24 minutes when, for the first time in the game, the Robins defence was stretched and Greg N’Goyi just managed to glance the ball past Hamann.

Hope proved to be short-lived, however, and Carshalton restored their three goal advantage on 27 minutes when Harrison seized onto Barry Stevens through ball, having been played onside by Marvin McCoy, with a clear run on goal before gliding the ball past Thomas.

Chappell again tried his luck with a low shot that went just wide and at the other end Stevens was denied a shooting chance as a result of what looked to be a harsh handball decision, but the energy was visibly draining from the home side and Carshalton were in total control, with no need to take any notice of the good news coming in from games elsewhere.

The second half was a formality with a tired Wealdstone side unable to create any consistent threat and Carshalton more than happy to play out time.

McCoy made a good break down the right and was denied by Hamann, a goalkeeper who has grown in stature in the second half of the season.

Midfielders Ryan Ashe for Wealdstone and Karl Murray for the Robins were both booked just to demonstrate there was some life left in the game and a late free-kick by Ashe was booted clear, but much of the second half entertainment was provided by the travelling Robins supporters, many in fancy dress, who were making the most of a wonderful afternoon.

The reception given to both sides by both sets of supporters at the end of the game was a credit to the non-league game and the final highlight was the award by the Robins supporters to captain, David Ray, for his outstanding performances throughout a challenging season.
