Carshalton Athletic 4 Tooting & Mitcham United 1

A blistering first-half performance at Colston Avenue on Tuesday saw Carshalton three up at the break with goals from Charlie Ide, Barry Stevens and Kenny Beaney on a night when Tooting’s ponderous defence was unable to cope with the positive running of the Robins attack.

For the first time in several weeks, the home team looked as though they were enjoying their football, and there was certainly much to admire for the spectators in an entertaining game that was fiercely contested as befits a derby.

While the second half never quite reached the heights of the first, Carshalton remained the better side.

Beaney’s shot struck the post before rebounding into play, but the victory was assured when Richard Jolly scored the fourth with a brilliant piece of opportunism on 80 minutes, before Paul Vines scored the visitors’ consolation goal with a shot that went in off the post five minutes from the end.

Special mention for the match official, Mr Mason, who handled what could have been a difficult game with skill and common sense.
