Assistant boss George Wakeling reckons morale is holding together Tooting & Mitcham’s Ryman Premier promotion drive as the Terrors battle injuries and suspensions.

Despite losing Jamie Byatt for the rest of the campaign, and having skipper Joe Vines suspended for four games, Tooting have gone on a three-match unbeaten away run, securing another three points with a valuable 2-1 win at Tonbridge Angels on Saturday thanks to an Aaron Goode strike and a late own-goal.

And Wakeling admits he cannot speak highly enough about his battling squad.

He said: “When we went to Hendon recently we could only name two substitutes but we still got a point.

“That tells you everything you need to know about this side.

“They are a special group players and they all want to pull each other along.

“You can box them in or play them out of position and they still have a go for you.

We have played really well in the last few games and when you consider our resources that is a real achievement.”

Wakeling and boss Billy Smith were no doubt encouraged by Tooting’s display in the abandoned London Senior Cup game against AFC Wimbledon on Monday night, the game curtailed with 20 minutes remaining due to a frozen pitch with the Terrors 1-0 up thanks to Paul Vines.

And Smith reckons his side are doing all he asks of them.

He said: “It is going to be nip and tuck for the rest of the season and all we can do is hang in there.

“I thought we played really well against Wimbledon and I would find it hard to find someone who did not have a good game.

“It is a case of approaching things one game at a time, but if we show the same spirit we have done in the past few games we have as good a chance as anyone.”
