Kingstonian slipped to a 4-3 Ryman League Cup defeat at Walton Casuals on Monday night.

Ks manager Alan Dowson used the opportunity of the league cup second round to re-jig his side, resting striker Bobby Traynor and Dean Lodge, and giving a full run-out to his squad players.

With the side two goals up within nine minutes and coasting, it looked like being a relatively comfortable night.

But the Stags had no intention of lying down, and rolled up their sleeves and took advantage of a defensive howler to get a goal back before the break.

In the second half the home side grew in confidence especially when ex-Ks man and Stags skipper Craig Lewington drew his side level.

Back came the Ks to restore the lead with a Lewis Cook screamer but the home side were far from finished and sub Martin Grant's late late show ensured his side went through to the third round.

The Ks now return to their Ryman League campaign on Saturday when they take on the Tonbridge Angels at Kingsmeadow.

On just three minutes the Stags backline was caught cold when a powerful first-time cross from Matt Gray out on the found a lurking CHRISTIAN JOLLEY hugging the far post and he coolly sidefooted the ball home past stranded keeper Chico Ramos.

Six minutes later a Mo Harkin through ball was blocked by Stags centre back Oliver Hunt but his understruck backpass was never going to reach Ramos allowing CHRISTIAN JOLLEY to intercept, enter the home box and fire home.

Then it was almost number three when Karl Beckford set striker Carl Wilson-Denis free down the left but his well-struck drive was pushed out for a corner by a full-stretch Ramos.

On 19 minutes Beckford had a go from some 35 yards which was held by Ramos.

Then the home side started the long haul back into the game. Striker Leon Yarnie took off down the right but his low cross was cut out by defender Rob Sheridan.

A Lewington free-kick from the right flew across the face of the Ks goalmouth. On 28 minutes Wilson-Denis out the right passed back to the busy Beckford on the edge of the Stags box but his effort was deflected wide.

Five minutes later some Stags defensive hesitancy allowed Harkin to slip through but his edge of the box rising drive was tipped ver by Ramos.

Then a Gray cross from the right was just too powerfully struck for skipper Francis Duku in the Stags goalmouth to control. Jolley latched onto the loose ball but Ramos made a point-blank block on the near post.

On 37 minutes a long and high clearance from Ramos saw debut keeper Rob Tolfrey and Duku collide into one another allowing ex-K's striker JAMES ROSE to stroke the ball home into an unguarded Ks goal.

Just two minutes into the second half a Cook cross from the left saw Ramos do well to push the ball out on the far post from an aerial Jolley in attendance.

Then a Beckford cross from the right found an unmarked Sheridan in the Stags box but he headed over.

On 55 minutes the Casuals were back in the game when a knock down fell to CRAIG LEWINGTON in the Ks goalmouth, he turned and slotted the ball home past Tolfrey.

On 62 minutes the K's retook the lead when Gray rolled an edge of the Stags box free-kick to LEWIS COOK and he let a loose a ferocious rising drive that flew into the roof of the net.

A resilient Stags though were up for the challenge. A Mark Walters cross was cleared by Duku deep in his own goalmouth.

Then sub Grant darted into the K's box and Tolfrey had to make an excellent point-blank save with his legs.

A corner from sub Paul Marney found the busy Grant on the far post but he volleyed over. With nine minutes to go a long high through ball from Hunt saw Tolfrey on the edge of his box to collect from Grant.

A Marney free-kick was seen out of the K's goalmouth by Wilson-Denis back on defensive duties.

With two minutes to go a Marney free-kick from the right curled over Tolfrey where MARTIN GRANT lashed the ball home from close range. The K's replied with a Cook corner from the right which saw the ball scrambled off the line.

As extra-time loomed and two minutes into additional time it was that man MARTIN GRANT again with the goal of the night when way out on the right he neatly curled the ball over Tolfrey into the far corner.
