The Robins continued their promising start to the season with a single goal victory against a Bognor team that was always in the game.

As on Saturday, the passing and running off the ball of Charlie Ide and Richard Jolly in the early stages had the Bognor defence at full stretch and the goal that had been threatened duly arrived on 25 minutes when Jolly’s clever pass gave Charlie Ide a clear run through and the chance to beat Anthony Ender with a cool finish for his second goal of the season.

Scott Cousin’s corner presented Matt Gray with a shooting chance that was driven wide and Bognor’s best response was a long range drive from the right by Charlie Oatway that drifted past the far post.

When Ide was fouled by Duncan Jupp, the referee played an excellent advantage and Adrian Toppin picked up the loose ball and drove forward before putting his shot just wide.

Goalkeeper Matt Reed was finally tested by Jupp following a foul by Wes Daly just outside the area, but the goalkeeper’s clean handling ensured that the Robins went in at half time in front.

A fine run by Richard Jolly early in the second period ended with a shot that rebounded off the bar with neither Ide or Alimi able to turn the loose ball in and Jolly was inches away from Liam Harwood’s ball back across the face of the goal from Gray’s free kick.

A goal at this stage would have calmed the nerves, but Bognor were clearly not willing to give up without a fight and the Robins play became anxious with Neighbour and Demetriou breaking forward at every opportunity and Reed being called on to punch clear several testing crosses.

Jamie England came on to replace Alimi and Barry Stevens made an early impression after coming on for Gray.

His shot from Scott Cousin’s pass was turned wide by keeper Edser and shortly after a break into the area ended with a shot that was blocked at the expense of a corner.

Adrian Stone came on late in the game to replace Jolly and with time running out the threat from Bognor faded leaving the Robins to finish as comfortable winners.

Manager Hayden Bird will have been delighted with six points and no goals conceded after the opening two games.
