Hampton & Richmond Borough striker Ben Wright’s shot at the professional ranks hangs in the balance as he struggles with the after effects of a flu virus.

The 20-year-old forward came off the bench to net his 13th goal in 14 starts in Saturday’s 2-0 Blue Square South win over Team Bath - days ahead of a possible trial match at League One Millwall.

Lions boss Kenny Jackett confirmed on Friday he would be running the rule over Wright in a reserve team clash this week, but Beavers boss Alan Devonshire is yet to hear when that is likely to be.

Wright missed out on a trial at another unnamed Football League outfit last week because of flu and sat out most of the weekend’s clash for the same reason as the Beveree chief chose to rest his in-form front man.

And Devonshire admits confusion still hangs around the player’s proposed trip to the New Den given he hasn’t heard from Jackett since last week.

“It wasn’t just about Millwall. There were a couple of things happening for him last week, but he had the flu quite badly and he had to rest,” he said.

“Kenny has said he would like to have a look at him and that was supposed to be this week, but I haven’t heard anything more on that. People have to come through me to sort it.

“It may have to be arranged for another time, but I’d like to think he will be fit for Saturday at least. There is nothing more to say. He has done well for us and has improved at a rapid rate of knots.”

Saturday’s triumph means Hampton are nine points adrift of league leaders Chelmsford City, with a game in hand and trip to the Clarets on the agenda early next month.

The Beavers have moved in to title chasing form with an unbeaten nine match league run that stretches back to a 2-1 defeat to Worcester City on November 8.

And Devonshire, who has seen his side keep six clean sheets in that time, is hoping it can continue with Thurrock - the visitors at the weekend - and a return to winning home form in his sights.

“I think we have drawn our last two home games 0-0 and we have to start getting that back to winning ways as soon as we can,” he added.

“I was delighted with the result against Team Bath. We were relatively comfortable against them after they attacked us for the first 20 minutes.

“We only picked up the usual knocks and bruises at the weekend, but nothing serious. People are looking refreshed.”

Hampton’s next three fixtures: Jan 24 Thurrock (h), Jan 31 Bromley (a), Feb 7 Newport County (h).
