Robins boss Hayden Bird is hoping to rewrite the history books when Carshalton Athletic get back to the business of FA Cup qualifying this weekend.

Carshalton host Ridgeons Premier side Leiston in the second qualifying round on Saturday, aiming to take one step closer to the First Round proper.

And having failed to make the First Round since 1997, Bird is eager for his high-flying stars to make their mark.

Bird said: “Potentially the game will be very difficult.

“But reaching the first round is something Carshalton have not done for years and that is quite motivating.

“The prestige of the FA Cup is huge.

“If you make the first round it raises your profile considerably, and the prize money on offer is also a big factor.

“Leiston will not be easy - they may be a level below our standard but they are far too good for the level they are in.

“There is no doubt they could operate at a higher level and will be a serious threat.”

Athletic will head into the game with confidence after a 2-1 win at near-neighbours Tooting & Mitcham saw the Robins climb to third in the Ryman Premier.

Richard Jolly and Junior Kadi grabbed the goals as Carshalton produced a dominant display well worthy of the three points.

Bird added: “We played well and the scoreline could easily have been more.

“We had a 20-minute spell where we completely dominated and passed the ball very well.

“We had a lot of opportunities which we did not take and the danger is that if they nick a goal all that counts for nothing.

“But the side is really firing at the moment - if I look at now compared to last season I would say we have improved in every area of the pitch.”

Carshalton Athletic’s next three matches: Sep 27 Leiston (FA Cup, h), Oct 4 Dover (h), 11 Wealdstone (a)
