AFC Wimbledon won the Trevor Jones Memorial Trophy on Monday night, eventually defeating local rivals Kingstonian 4-1 on penalties after the match had finished 1-1 in normal time. In their first home game of the season, Kingsmeadow Stadium tenants Kingstonian entertained their landlords in the annual pre-season friendly held in memory of the popular Ks player Trevor Jones, who tragically died five years ago.

Both sides had a usefulworkout, with Ks skipper and keeper Luke Garrard making a series of top saves to keep his side in the game.

Joe Hutton finally got a late classy drive past Garrard but deep into additional time NJ Lampton drew the Ks level from the penalty spot. The only headache for Ks manager Alan Dowson was seeing his classy centre back Max Hustwick carried off late on with a twisted knee. The Ks' next game at Kingsmeadow is an attractive friendly against a Fulham X1 this Friday (7.30pm).

The Dons got off to an electrifying start on Monday, with winger Evans Kouassi flying down the right in the very first minute, but his cross was cut out for a corner, which was mishit by Adam Thompson, but Garrard tipped the ball out to safety.

Dean Lodge replied with a cross from the left but he went behind. An awkward cross from ex-Torquay man Tony Bedeau was picked up by Dons keeper Jack Turner on the near post. Five minutes later a cross from Bedeau found striker Carl Wilson-Dennis but his header was held by Turner on his line.

On 20 minutes a through ball from Dean Mason set striker Jason Norville free in the Ks box.

He disentangled himself from Garrard and, with the Ks goal at his mercy, slammed the ball against the bar. On 26 minutes Kouassi took off again down the right at some pace, Garrard flew out and made a fine block, but Thompson was on hand to whack the ball away. Another Bedeau cross found Jon Neal deep in the Dons' box but he headed straight at Turner. In the final minute of the half Garrard raced out of his box to deny the dangerous duo of Mason and Norville.

On 50 minutes, a measured low drive from Norville just inside the Ks box looked goalbound until a full-stretch Garrard pushed it out for a corner.

Norville had another go from the edge of the Ks box but this time he went wide.

A cushioned header from Norville tried to find Kouassi on the edge of the Ks box but Garrard intervened. Kouassi then cut in from the right flank and sent in a low cross that went begging.

On 65 minutes Hutton exploited some Ks hesitancy and struck from close range but again Garrard made a brave full-stretch save. On 70 minutes, the game was delayed when Garrard collided with Max Hustwick. The Ks centre back fell awkwardly and was eventually carried off.

Ks sub Nick Rundell sent in a free-kick from the edge of the Dons box that was well held by sub keeper Max Banahene. With the game seemingly destined for a no-goal show Sam Hutton broke the deadlock with a well-struck drive from distance through a forest of players that caught out Garrard.

With two minutes to go sub Tommy Williams found sub Phil Williams deep in the Dons box but he struck the ball tamely at Banahene. Six minutes into additional time a Rundell throw from the left saw Michael Peacock up-end Lampton in the Dons' box. Up stepped NJ Lampton a minute later to blast the spot-kick into the roof of then net with virtually the last kick of the game.

With no extra-time, the game went straight to penalties. With text-book spot kicks, Dons' Elliott Godfrey, Chris Hussey, Luke Pigden and Kennedy Adjei all comfortably beat Garrard. Only Tommy Williams successfully converted a penalty in reply for the Ks. Lampton struck over and Bedeau unluckily hit a post. New Walton & Hersham player-coach and former Ks favourite Matt Elverson presented the trophy and medals to the two squads.

The Kingstonian FC Supporters' Club 2008 AGM will be held at Kingsmeadow on Thursday, August 7, at 7.45pm. All members are welcome.
