After plain sailing in the league so far this season, leaders Kingstonian finally hit the Rocks on Monday night, losing 2-1 at home to a fine Bognor Regis side.

A second-half equaliser from Andre McCollin looked to have rescued a point for the K’s before Matt Drage conceded a needless penalty five minutes from time.

Classy playmaker Ben Johnson swept the ball into the corner to seal an impressive win for the men in green, whose pass-and-press style sparked terrace talk of a non-league Barcelona.

McCollin - occasionally angry, usually feisty, nearly always effective - had an eventful weekend.

The Sky Sports cameras were at Kingsmeadow for Non League Day on Saturday and the former Yeovil Town striker scored all four goals against Grays Athletic in a devastating spell either side of half-time.

That 4-1 victory put K’s in jubilant mood ahead of the Rocks' visit but the away side dominated the first-half and deservedly took the lead through Ben Godfrey’s clipped finish from the edge of the box.

If K’s lacked fluency, they still managed to have their say, with Dee Okojie the main creator from midfield.

It was his deflected cross that led to McCollin’s fifth goal of the weekend before Drage’s moment of madness.

“What we do know was it was a yard outside the box,” lamented manager Alan Dowson.

“But he didn’t need to dive in there. We’ll just have to kick on.”

K’s travel to Margate on Saturday for the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Fans may be relishing a trip to the seaside, but the Gate are a devilish draw at this early stage of the competition.

K’s haven’t reached the first round proper – and the chance to play league opposition – since the extraordinary cup-run of 2001 which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Bristol City in a fourth-round replay.

“It’s the worst draw ever,” added Dowson.

“It’s not a very nice draw for us, but I don’t think they’ll be too happy with it either. We’ll treat it as a league game and go and attack it and I’m sure we’ll be alright.”
