All remaining National League games have been cancelled, despite the fact not all clubs have cast their vote either for or against the idea.

In a statement published on Wednesday afternoon, the league said that the overwhelming support for cancelling the season, which they had recommended clubs vote for, meant they no longer had to wait for the May 7 deadline they had originally set for clubs.

With the majority of votes cast by those teams in the National League, National League North and the National League South, the league said it was clear that most were in favour of cancelling the remaining games, so the league took the decision to announce the cancellation as soon as possible so clubs could assess the impact right away.

In a statement on the National League website, the league said: “With almost 90 per cent of responses returned it is evident a clear majority of Clubs are in favour, including a majority of Clubs in each of the National League, National League North and National League South divisions.

“In the knowledge that the ordinary resolution has passed, the League’s Board has chosen to communicate the decision now and before the last few responses are received, which will not change the outcome, to enable Clubs to make business decisions with greater clarity as soon as possible. Clubs yet to respond still have an opportunity to do so, and the League wishes to include as many preferences as possible before the final voting result is declared.”

With Barnet sitting mid-table in the National League, their future is likely to be in the same division next season, but for clubs in the promotions and relegation spots, things remain unclear and decisions still have to be made.

The statement continued: “The options concerning the sporting outcomes of the 2019/20 season remain under careful and timely consideration, and further updates will be given in due course.”

National League Chief Executive Officer, Michael Tattersall, said he hoped the news would help teams adapt to the difficult situation and provide some stability. He said: “At a time when the entire country is wrestling with the devastating impact of Covid-19, the cancellation of the remaining normal season matches brings a degree of certainty to our clubs coping with the business implications of the virus.”
