Ahhhh.....the joy of six.
I doubt I was the only one to take a picture of the scoreboard on my mobile phone as the seconds counted down on Brentford’s 6-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.
It was a shame so few fans saw it, because boss Uwe Rosler’s men – and to their credit, Bournemouth – produced a very entertaining game on Tuesday night.
Yes, Brentford banged in six, but I don’t think anyone would have complained had the Cherries hit two or three of their own.
I’m not being a merchant of doom, but the Bees defence – admittedly at 3-0 up – was worryingly open in the second half until Michael Grella and Shaleum Logan’s ‘goal’ wrapped things up.
I wrote in these pages last week that I felt the Bees had missed the no nonsense presence of Leon Legge. It was a relief to see his much-anticipated return on Tuesday.
He didn’t disappoint the Ealing Road faithful in almost scoring with his first touch and at the back he made a big impact.
No disrespect to the others, but we looked more solid and one Legge clearance from the edge of his 18-yard box comfortably reached the Bournemouth goalkeeper.
Have it, indeed.
Now I come to Grella. The man clearly has ability and his rise to prominence presents Uwe with a bit of headache.
His four goals make him joint top scorer at the club, which tells its own story about where Brentford’s problems dwell.
The American conducted an entire post-match interview in the mixed zone without using the word awesome, which is a great start.
The Leeds United fans always rated him and, hopefully, he is going to give the preferred Clayton Donaldson-Gary Alexander combo up front a run for its money.
If Grella is anything like the person who updates his Wikipedia page – it had been updated with a record of his four goal salvo by 9am on Wednesday – then hopefully he’ll be quick to add to his tally.
So the Bees took a step closer to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, before the FA Cup visit of Basingstoke Town on Saturday.
Despite all the euphoria over the Cherries’ chastening, I fully expect to be discussing the prospect of a replay next week. It is just science.
