London Scottish number eight Mark Bright has revealed the lure of Championship rugby and an ultimatum from his wife was behind his summer switch to west London.

The 33-year-old back rower collected the man-of-the-match award but finished on the losing side, as the Exiles crashed 23-16 to former Premiership outfit Leeds Carnegie at the Athletic Ground on Saturday.

It could have been better than a losing bonus point had head coach Simon Amor’s men not missed four penalty kicks during the course of the afternoon.

But, despite the disappointment of a fourth Championship defeat of the season, former Redruth star Bright has insisted he is enjoying life in Richmond – thanks to other-half Angela.

“I had spent five years in Cornwall and my wife said it was a time for a change for me,” he said.

“It was either getting out of Cornwall or retiring, which was pretty much the ultimatum she gave me.

“I’ve got unfinished business, I wanted to play in the Championship and I’m enjoying it here at London Scottish.”

An Ollie Grove score was the highlight of Scottish’s afternoon as they hauled themselves back into a game that Leeds looked like they would run away with as they took a 17-9 lead just after the break.

But Bright, whose side followed the match up with a 43-10 defeat at Esher in the British and Irish Cup on Wednesday, admitted they had not done enough to win.

“We just made too many errors. If we’d made half as many errors we would have won that game,” he added.

“We made error after error, our heads went down and we started chasing the game. Once you do that you are going to struggle.

“You can’t blame the kickers. Maybe I should have had them kick for a corner or two, so I’ll shoulder that. If they miss, they miss them. If they get them they’re a hero.”

Scottish travel to Plymouth Albion on Saturday where Bright is looking to re-acquaint himself with his old stomping ground.

“It will be good to get back down there and see the family. I’m looking forward to it,” he added.
