Winger Seb Stegmann may have gone to the other side of the world and back to end his injury nightmare, but now he is ready to settle down at Harlequins.

The 22-year-old Addlestone speedster scored his first try of the season in the 28-17 win over Leicester at Welford – Quins’ first Premiership success there since 1997 – on Saturday.

Stegmann, back from a stint of rehab and rugby in Australia over the summer, has suffered two anterior cruciate ligament injuries in the same knee in the last two years and is three games in to his Quins comeback.

He is out of contract at the end of this season, but is hoping his form can trigger a clause in his deal that will see him at the Stoop for at least another season.

“It has been quite a long journey for me. It is as though I have become a professional in rugby rehab,” he said.

“I did the original injury in the last game of the 2008-09 season and then did it again the week before I was supposed to play again the following year.

“I came back again in April and had the chance to play in Sydney, which was an amazing experience. “It is great to be back, but in many ways it feels like I have not been away because I’ve played so much in the last five months.

“It couldn’t have gone any better at Welford Road and when the try came I couldn’t believe it.

“If everything goes well – and I’m confident it will – hopefully I’ll get the chance to carry on at Quins.”

Academy graduates Sam Smith and Stegmann got Saturday’s game off to the perfect start with tries in the opening 10 minutes – in answer to Boris Stankovich’s opener – as Quins led 17-15 at the break.

Ollie Kohn rumbled over at the start of the second half and fly half Nick Evans added two penalties to secure Quins’ sixth straight win.

And Stegmann is hoping the youngsters can shine again when London Irish visit in the LV= Cup on Saturday.

“There is no feeling among the squad that we have not got the experience. We believe we have the talent,” he added.

“It should be a good, open game on Saturday. We want to make up for losing to Newcastle Falcons in the semi-finals last year.”
