The managerial conundrum at Brentford looks no nearer a solution after Derek McInnes turned the Bees down.

The St Johnstone boss has opted to stay north of the border after guiding the Saints to a mid-table finish on their return to the Premier League.

He was the Bees' preferred candidate but, having been offered the job, it was announced on Wednesday he was staying with St Johnstone.

Brentford are now rumoured to be chasing Rangers defender David Weir or former West Bromwich Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo.

Should they also turn down the role then the Bees board might return to Nicky Forster, who ended his stint in charge with a thrilling 4-4 draw at play-off participants Huddersfield Town.

Jeffrey Schlupp and Lewis Grabban both scored twice as Brentford came from behind three times to snatch a point and end the season in 11th place on 61 points, two places and a point worse than last year, leaving Forster to reflect on his first foray into management.

"I feel proud and I enjoyed it," he said.

"I feel honoured to have been given the chance and it has been a valuable education for me and one that I would like to continue.

"I have got the taste for it.

"I have been in the game for 20 years and I want to stay in it, it is the best game in the world in my opinion.

"It is a fantastic environment to work in and I would like to stay in it."
