Chairman David Reid sees no reason why London Scottish’s remarkable rise to prominence should stop with promotion to the RFU Championship.

Scottish secured promotion in the most dramatic style possible last Saturday when David Howells scored a breakaway try to clinch a last-gasp victory at promotion rivals Barking.

The 17-13 success takes the Exiles into the RFU Championship just 12 years after then-owner Tony Tiarks pulled out of the club, rendering it effectively bankrupt and forced to drop nine divisions down from the Premiership.

A steady rise over the past 11 years has been completed by head coach Simon Amor’s men recorded 27 successive victories after a less than auspicious start to the current campaign.

“This promotion was down to a great effort on the pitch after losing the first three games,” said Reid, also chairman of Tesco PLC.

“To win the next 27 showed great characer, consummate with the heritage of this great and proud club, “It was a fine achievement to beat a very good Barking side in our last match.

“Having sarted again in 2000 from the club’s lowest point in league 10, to now gain promotion to the Championship is a Herculean achievement by all.

“We now to raise the bar again for the next challenge. We are all up for it and dare to dream.”

Success on the pitch has been matched by ambition of it with a solid business plan being produced under the guidance of chief executive Tony Copsey.

On it, it looked as they Scottish would be pipped in their winner-takes-all clash in Essex.

Despite Lewis Calder opening the scoring after five minutes, touching down after the Scottish pack had driven forward, a penalty try had pegged Scottish back.

Having been reduced to 14 men, Scottish trailed by three points with the hosts camped in their 22 until leading scorer Howells raced 80m to put himself firmly into the club’s folklore.

Player-coach Amor said: “I am so proud of the whole squad.

“The victory is the result of a mammoth effort from everybody - the whole squad as well as the support team behind them.

“The team were extremely grateful to all the supporters who made the trip to Barking and for their support throughout the season.

“Every time the team takes to the pitch, we do so with a huge amount pf pride and passion for the shirt and the club.”
