Sutton United boss Paul Doswell reckons capturing Woking midfielder Francis Quarm is about making sure his side can win ugly.

The Ryman Premier Division winner arrived on-loan for the rest of the season ahead of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tooting & Mitcham, which featured goals from Tom Davis and Bradley Woods-Garness.

Doswell expects a busy second-half of the season in conditions not suited to attractive football and says the former Hampton & Richmond Borough star’s arrival adds muscle to the cause.

“We are wary we are going to be playing a lot of games over the next 16 weeks and we want to give winning the league our best shot,” he said.

“Pitches are getting more boggy and difficult to play the style of football we’d like to, so we have to combat that and to do that we have to be big and strong.

“If we lose players through bookings and suspensions as a result, we don’t want to be weakened in any way.

“It is not about playing pretty football, it is about getting results.”

Woking loan star Andy Forbes is set to return to the Cards next weekend when his three-month spell at the club ends on January 15, but Doswell is confident of retaining his services.

“We spoke to Woking four weeks ago and early indications were that he will be staying with us, but we haven’t heard anything since,” he added.

“We’d love to keep him, but it has got to be on the right terms. There are whispers Woking would like him back, but I’m hoping to sort it out.”

The Gander Green Lane chief is also expecting to be handed a timely boost for his promotion push with defender Alan Bray back in training.

The full-back should be fit for action in March and Doswell thinks he could have a big impact on the title race.

“Alan has been back running and his rehab is going well. We’re hoping he’ll be able to play a full part in training at some point in February,” he said.

“It will be a massive boost for us to have him back because he is the best left back in the league by a million miles. Fingers crossed.”
