Bees boss Andy Scott has backed striker Charlie MacDonald, despite admitting his penalty miss at AFC Bournemouth was a turning point in the game.

MacDonald saw his spot-kick saved with his side trailing 2-1 at Dean Court to goals from Liam Feeney and former Hampton & Richmond Borough man Marvin Bartley.

Cherries substitute Steve Fletcher made sure of the points in the second-half as Brentford missed the opportunity to make it a club record sixth away win on the spin.

And Scott, whose side remain just two points adrift of the play-off places, reckons MacDonald’s miss cost his men a share of the spoils.

“Yes (he will continue to take penalties), he hit the target and the keeper saved it,” he said.

“If it had gone in we would probably have got a point.”

Brentford, who had won their previous four League One encounters stretching back to November 20, paid the price for a sluggish start on Monday having edged past Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 on New Year’s Day.

And Scott insists the defeat is a minor set-back as he looks for his side to bounce back at struggling Yeovil Town on Saturday.

“It’s a blip. We’ve been on a fantastic run. We’ve got to defend better than the three we conceded,” he added.

“But if we had got a point of out it, nobody would have begrudged us it.

“Football has a way of kicking you in the teeth sometimes, but we’ll bounce back. We’ve been on a terrific run and collected a lot of points recently.

“This is a tough place to come, but we’ve shown we are more than capable of mixing it with the teams above us.

“I didn’t feel Bournemouth – apart from the first 20 minutes when we allowed them to play – were any better than us. We should have got something out of it.”
