London Scottish head coach Simon Amor fears his side’s defence will let them down unless they start putting games to bed.

The Exiles raced to a try-scoring bonus point inside 26 minutes, but only ran out 31-25 winners at Macclesfield having survived a second-half fight back.

Rory Damant (2), Tim Holgate and John Bordiss all-crossed in the first-half, but only JP O’Reilly added to the score in the second.

And Amor insists his men must develop a killer instinct before their profligacy makes them pay.

“The fundamentals are coming together, but we are just struggling to find that level of consistency throughout a game,” he said.

“There are some very good sides in this league with proud histories to defend and we cannot just rely on our defence to get us through.

“We are comnig out of the blocks at the start of games relatively well, but we are having dips just before half-time and letting teams back into it.

“We have to recognise games ebb and flow and that when you have the momentum you have to put sides to bed.”

Scottish have won their last eight National Division One games to sit third in the table - six points behind leaders Barking, who they face in the last fixture before Christmas.

They host former Championship side Coventry on Saturday and Amor - who was without wing wizard David Howells last week - is wary of their threat to his side’s unbeaten run.

“They are still adapting to dropping down and have lost a lot of players from last year,” he added.

“But they are a young side and they do score a lot of tries.

“We need to make sure we start as we have been.”

London Scottish’s next three games: Nov 20 Coventry (h), 27 Blaydon (a), Dec 4 Wharfedale (h).
