Bees boss Andy Scott has ruled out a move for some of the World Cup’s lesser known stars as they are more likely to have their sights set higher than League One.

Former AFC Wimbledon striker Shane Smeltz hit the headlines this week with a goal for New Zealand against defending champions Italy on Sunday and a goal-assist against Slovakia five days earlier.

There has been a host of other eye-catching performances from the smaller nations, but the Brentford boss says he is having trouble enough with recruitment from the domestic transfer market let alone spreading the net further afield.

“It just shows there are plenty of players out there who can get the opportunity to play on the highest stage if things fall right for you. I’m quite jealous,” he said.

“But a lot of those players fancy their chances of going on to bigger and better things than perhaps playing at Brentford.”

However, the Girffin Park chief had to admit former Ipswich Town loan star Tommy Smith’s showings at the heart of the New Zealand defender had given him particular pleasure.

“It is a great experience for him. He originally got picked for his country on the back of his performances on loan with us,” he added.

“It is nice to feel like we’ve played a large part in his success.”
