London Scottish skipper Gary Truman reckons his side will have deserved to finish second in the National Division One table should they complete the job this weekend.

The Exiles were held 24-24 by historic rivals Blackheath on Saturday meaning they must win or draw at Sedgley Park this weekend to be certain of being runners-up to runaway champions Esher.

Director of rugby Brett Taylor is planning for life as title favourites next season although elevation to the Championship is not be out of the question should teams above them go to the wall.

Scottish’s form has faltered over the last couple of months as they have lost touch with their Molesey Road rivals in losing four of their last six games.

And while Truman admits standards have slipped recently, he insists their season must be put in perspective.

“It’s been a strange couple of months for us a team and we have found out a lot about ourselves,” he told the club’s website.

“I have no doubt it’s been noticeable from the viewpoint of a supporter, as it has been as a player, that we haven’t been performing to the standards we set ourselves in the first half of the season.

“But it’s important we remember what we have achieved so far this season. It’s been a fantastic year as the newly promoted team and we thoroughly deserve to be in second place.”

A late score from full-back Stuart Peek to put his side 24-21 up looked to have sealed the win on Saturday after a Rory Damant try had helped ensure his side trailed by only two points at the break.

But a penalty 30 metres out saw Blackheath level with the last kick of the game to leave the Exiles with a job to do on the season’s final day.
