Brentford striker Carl Cort’s new lease of life under boss Andy Scott looks set to have landed him the chance of extending his stay at Griffin Park.

The 32-year-old had feared for his future having gone nearly five months without a start, but has impressed with two goals in his last three games including hitting his side’s second in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Southend.

Cort, dogged by a persistent knee problem, has been given a taylor-made training schedule since his last start at Gateshead in the FA Cup first round.

And Scott, who is hunting more striking resources for next season, believes the former Newcastle United star’s hard work is beginning to pay off for both parties.

“Earlier in the season we were still getting used to his training schedule and how he worked,” he said.

“In terms of games, he played a lot at the beginning of the season and I didn’t think we had the fitness and training schedule right with him.

“In the middle of the season we found a way of getting him and keeping him match fit without him having to train and affecting his knee.

“He scored a great goal and I think we have it right with him.

“There is every chance we’ll be sitting down with him to talk about next season.”

Cort has notched seven goals in 15 starts this season, his best return in a campaign since bagging 11 for Wolverhampton Wanderers four years ago.

“It is probably the fittest he has been and more capable of playing back to back games than he has in the last three or four years,” added Scott.

“It works for him and is working for us and we might be able to use him even more next season.”
