Harlequins director of rugby Conor O’Shea has told full-back Mike Brown to forget about England for the time being and concentrate on his club form.

The 24-year-old bagged a brace - to add to scores from David Strettle, Tom Williams, Chris Brooker and George Lowe - as Quins romped past Leeds Carnegie 46-11 on Saturday.

Brown is very much on the outside looking in when it comes to team boss Martin Johnson’s England set-up, and O’Shea admits there are others ahead of him in the pecking order.

But that hasn’t stopped the new Stoop chief from reminding his man he has the ability to get back in to the international reckoning providing his domestic form is up to scratch.

“I’ve known Browny since he was 16 when I presented a jersey to him in school, and he’s an outstanding rugby player,” he said.

“Brian Smith was down in the week watching training and he knows exactly where he is in terms of the England set up.

“Browny is very much in the mould of somebody like Chris Latham, and that’s what he can model himself on being.

“He’s got a massive left boot, he breaks tackles when you don’t think he can. He’s very solid and dependable at the back, I obviously like left sided full backs.

“He’s a great work ethic about him, but there’s probably five full-backs that you could list off, Delon Armitage, Nick Abendanon, Ollie Morgan, and Alex Goode in there as well.

“England have got some good full-backs to chose from, Foden is the man in possession, but Browny should forget about England and just concentrate on his game.

“It will look after itself because he’s got enough quality to be back up there without a doubt.”

Brown has made no secret of his desire to learn from the former Ireland international full-back, but while O’shea admits the feeling is mutual, he insists there will be no favouritism when it comes to selection.

“When I sat down with him just after Christmas during his contract talks, we talked about how we could work together and I’m looking forward to it,” he added.

“But we’ve also got a young kid, Ross Chisholm, and Tom Williams and they’ll be pressure on Browny within the club. We’ve got some exciting talent coming up, which is the exciting part of sitting here.”
