Brentford manager Andy Scott finally got his man this week after admitting he has been tracking new signing John Akinde for two seasons.

The striker joined the Bees on a one month loan from Bristol City on Monday and was the only new face to arrive on deadline day, though Lionel Ainsworth, Wojciech Szczesny and Tommy Smith all extended their loan deals at the club.

Akinde caught the eye when he scored twice against Brentford last season when on loan at Wycombe, but Scott revealed he had been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old even before he signed for City in 2008.

"We knew about him when he was at Ebbsfleet and we have kept an eye on him since then," he said.

"He's a big strong powerful forward and has done well at Bristol City and Gary Johnson has been pretty pleased with him.

"He's been in their first team squad but they want him to get games and we can give him that and he has done very well against us in the past.

"We need to strengthen the squad in all areas and we only had three centre forwards so felt we needed to strengthen there."

Ainsworth originally signed for a month last week but will now stay until the end of the season, despite missing out on his debut when Saturday's match at Oldham Athletic was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Smith turned his one-month loan into a three-month one from Ipswich but it was Arsenal keeper Szczesny's decision to commit himself to the club until the end of the season that left Scott purring.

"He has been outstanding for us and it's a massive coup for the football club that he has decided to stay," he said.

"We wanted to keep him for as long as possible and finally got it done on Monday which we were ecstatic about.

"He gets on great with the other lads and is always around the banter in the dressing room and is involved with everything.

"He wants to be Arsenal number one and he knows to do that he has to show what he is capable of with us and is doing that.

"If he continues to play as he has been doing so far then Brentford fans are in for an excellent end to the season with some of the players we have got at the club right now."
