Brentford’s Leon Legge insists he is keeping his feet on the ground having emerged as one of his side’s standout performer in the club’s run of good form.

The 24-year-old has become the first player on boss Andy Scott’s teamsheet since scoring his first senior goal for the Bees in a 1-0 FA Cup triumph over Walsall in November.

Legge, a former adult care worker, was a regular for Ryman League Premier Division side Tonbridge Angels less than nine months ago, but has delivered a host of man of the match displays to become an indispensible part of Scott’s League One squad.

Young Fulham defender Fulham Chris Smalling made a similar jump from non-League Maidstone United in 2008 and last week signed a pre-contract agreement to join Premier League champions Manchester United next season.

But Legge, under contract at Griffin Park until June 2011, is not planning on going anyway himself for the time being and is only too pleased to cocncentrate on continuing his professional development as a Brentford player.

“When you are playing non-League football you want to get a break in league football,” he said.

“Every footballer wants to play at the highest level, but Premier League is big time because you are playing against some of the best teams in the world.

“It would be nice to one day play there but it is one step at a time. I’ve only played ten or 11 games at professional level so far, so I’m not getting too far ahead of myself.

“I took my chance when it was given to me and luckily it has worked out.

“All I can do I is keep getting good results, keep doing my job as a Brentford player and see where it goes from there. I signed a new contract in December and I’m happy.”
