Ricky Wellard reveals Dons boss Terry Brown has given him free reign in the Wimbledon midfield - on the proviso he chips in with some much-needed goals.

Wellard conjured up a match-winning pass in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Kidderminster, threading in Danny Kedwell for the crucial goal.

And following his second successive start, after a season peppered with injury and a loss of form, the midfield summer signing from Ashford Town finally feels he is making his mark.

Wellard said: “Terry has just told me to play the way I always play as that is the reason he brought me to the club.

“He said he does not want me to change at all - he just wants me to express myself on the pitch.

“Having said that we know as a midfield unit we have to start helping out with goals and the boss has been banging on about that.

“We have been trying to claim Luke Moore as a midfielder but the boss is having none of it!

“I feel really good at the moment - I feel a lot more settled now.

“I had only been at one club before coming to Wimbledon so I think it has taken me a bit longer than most to find my feet, but I am happy and really enjoying my football.”

The 21-year-old came to Kingsmeadow with a reputation for being a ball-playing talent.

And Wellard admitted having the likes of Kedwell, Moore and Jon Main makes his job a lot easier.

He added: “I think as a three they are the best strike force in the league.

“I knew all about Jon as when I was at Ashford you would hear about him scoring week in, week out.

“Now having come to the club and playing with Danny and Luke it is incredible.

“Whoever plays up front I know I will get plenty of opportunities to create something for them.”

Wimbledon have emerged from a sticky spell with back to back wins over the last week, a sequence that has re-ignited their play-off hopes.

And Wellard feels the best is yet to come from Terry Brown’s men.

He added: “There is a definite mood at the club that we have turned the corner.

“Most of the games in this league are very tight and there seems to be little between the teams, so if I can help to make a difference that is great.”
