Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care has vowed to fight for his place after being dropped from the England starting line-up to face Argentina at the weekend.

The 22-year-old will start on the bench with in-form London Irish number Paul Hodgson taking his place after impressing boss Martin Johnson in Saturday’s 18-9 defeat to Australia.

And Care, who was replaced by the former Sutton & Epsom RFC man in the second-half at Twickenham, admits it is up to him to do the same should he get the chance.

“Obviously it is disappointing not to be starting. I was quite happy with my performance and really enjoyed the game at the weekend,” he said.

“The coaches have decided to go with something a little different this time. Hopefully I will get my chance.

“Paul has got four or five caps now and hasn’t started a game yet so he deserves a go. I’ve just got to try and make an impact when I get on and hopefully get given another opportunity against New Zealand.

“There wasn’t much space to run into against Australia so hopefully coming on later against Argentina will give me an opportunity to do that.”

Australian scrum-half Will Genia said he couldn’t believe he had played against Jonny Wilkinson given he had watched him win the World Cup for England in 2003.

And Care admitted playing alongside the Toulon star for the first time was also a highlight for him.

“I watched the World Cup final on the sofa with my family, so it is great to be playing with him. He is a world class player and it is fantastic to have him playing inside you,” he added.

Argentina will be missing the likes of Juan Martin Hernandez, Felipe Contepomi and Juan Leguizamon, but expect to have Quins star Gonzalo Tiesi in the starting line-up - leaving Care relishing the match-up.

“We fully expect a tough and very physical game no matter what the line-up,” he said.

“As long as I don’t run straight at Gonzalo I should be alright I reckon.”
