Brentford defender Ryan Dickson has laughed off the idea of being a regular score for the Bees, but insists he could continue to be a threat at set-pieces.

The 22-year-old headed his side’s first in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Norwich City as he profited for the first time from one of midfielder David Hunt’s long throws.

Boss Andy Scott had told the full-back to get forward for set-pieces prior to the game and the former Plymouth Argyle man was only too pleased to get on the score sheet.

Left-back Dickson, who played as a striker as a youngster, has now scored two goals for Brentford - adding to a goal on-loan at Torquay United - but he is not holding his breath over adding to that tally.

“The gaffer said before the game he wanted to send me up for set-pieces cause he thought I could get a goal or two, and I laughed it off to be fair,” he said.

“I’ve got a decent leap on me to be fair and I do fancy myself to get a goal every now and then.

“There were times where I wanted to go up again, but once we were two goals up it was about keeping our shape.

“It would have been nice to add to it, but I think that is my goal for the season now. I’ve got two with my right foot and now one with my head.

“It would be nice to get one with my left foot, but that was my first chance at a set-piece so we’ll see.”

Manager Scott, who is out to add a defender to his ranks ahead of Saturday’s trip to Southampton, believes there is more to come from a team that has produced a convincing unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Bees comfortably saw off the Canaries in the second-half after a slow start and Dickson believes their late goal is a timely reminder Brentford can’t become complacent.

“You have to be on top of your game at this level. We started slowly and maybe weren’t 100 per cent focused,” he added.

“When you’re against players of this standard you have to be focused the whole time.

“Last year you could get away with it in League Two, but you have to be on top of things all the time.”
