Brentford 2 (Dickson 51, Hunt 71) Norwich City 1

Brentford continued their solid start to the new season with an impressive win over Norwich City at Griffin Park on Tuesday night.

After an even first half, the Bees took control early in the second, when Ryan Dickson headed them in front, and they never looked like losing after David Hunt’s superb free-kick extended their lead.

New Norwich manager Paul Lambert, watching from the stands, saw Owain Tudor-Jones pull one back in injury time but, by then, Brentford had the points safely secured.

Manager Andy Scott was delighted to take all three points and with the quality of his side’s display: “Great result and a very good performance. I’m very, very pleased.

"In terms of quality and some of the passing and movement, it was excellent tonight all round.”

Scott fielded an unchanged side from the one that drew with Brighton on Saturday.

The defence was nearly caught napping in the opening minute, when Cody McDonald was released through the middle but his shot from outside the box flew over the crossbar.

A minute later, Myles Weston hooked a cross from Danny Foster on to the roof of the net as the Bees hit back.

Sam Saunders did well to win a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but his free-kick was deflected behind for a goal kick.

Bees skipper Alan Bennett slipped to allow Grant Holt to get to the bye-line, before cutting the ball back to the six yard box, where it was turned out for a corner that Tudor-Jones headed just over the bar.

Brentford then suffered a blow, when Bennett was forced to depart with a groin injury, but his replacement Karleigh Osborne went on to enjoy a solid performance alongside Mark Phillips at the back.

Brentford turned it up a notch in the second half and, within six minutes, had gone ahead when a long throw from Hunt on the right was headed home from six yards by Dickson.

Saunders then produced a sublime piece of skill by the right corner flag to nutmeg Holt and whip over a cross that was half cleared before falling to Sam Wood, whose shot was blocked.

Hunt extended the Bees' lead, when his free-kick from the edge of the penalty box and dead centre fizzed through the Norwich wall and past Ben Alnwick.

Tudor-Jones's late consolation came by way of a free-kick from 25 yards out that took a slight deflection before beating Lewis Price.

Afterwards, Scott was in bullish mood as he looked forward to Brentford’s trip to Southampton on Saturday: “I expected to win tonight and I expect to win again at Southampton on Saturday.

"They lost tonight and we’ll take a good following down there and they’ve got to cope with us.”
