Paul Doswell reckons the element of surprise will be a crucial factor in Sutton United’s hopes of staging a successful Ryman Premier campaign next season.

Doswell has vowed to clear the decks at Gander Green Lane and go with youth and this week announced his first summer signings, snapping up pacy brothers Billy and James Hawes.

And the Sutton boss insists that will just be the start.

Doswell said: “It became pretty obvious to me towards the end of the season that I would have to break the team up.

“I am looking for young, hungry players who are looking for an opportunity.

“The teams will not have the recognisable names in it like last year, but anyone who really knows their onions will know we are getting some real talents.

“My aim is to bring in young players who have played at a higher level - give them a chance to shine and put together a Sutton team that can stick together for a few years.”

Billy and James certainly fit that bill, with the pair arriving from Boreham Wood and Braintree Town respectively.

And Doswell is looking forward to injecting their pace into the line-up.

He added: “They are exactly the type of players we are looking for.

“James is 23 and will give us a lot of balance - we did not have a genuine left-sided player last season and that is what he can offer.

“He can play up front but can also fill in at full-back and that is a real bonus.

“Billy is 21 and is an attacking full-back and really likes to play football.

“Both of them were unsure about coming to Sutton but we have sold the club to them.

“This will be just the start and I can guarantee Sutton fans that there are exciting times ahead.”
