Wasps and England wing Paul Sackey will be guest of honour at Warlingham rugby club’s awards dinner at their Hamsey Green clubhouse on May 16.

Sackey is one of three Premiership players attending the evening, which is being staged as a celebration of local rugby – John Hart and Kyle Traynor, who both learned their rugby at Hamsey Green - will also be among the honoured guests basking in the glow of Warlingham’s most successful season for well over a decade.

From the age of 15 to 50-plus, Warlingham were playing winning rugby in the past season.

As well as the club’s first team consolidating its place in London 3, Warlingham’s 2nd XV and under-18s Academy side both won their Surrey titles, while the Warlingham vets got as far as the quarter-finals of the Evergreen Cup, and the under-16s won their division in the county league.

Hart and Traynor will be keenly interested in the progress of their old club.

Hart, the 6ft 5in-tall No8 at Wasps, and prop forward Traynor, in his first season at Edinburgh having represented Scotland through all age group levels, still have several former team mates turning out at Warlingham each week.

Sackey, 29, has 21 England caps, and played in the 2007 World Cup final.

Traynor, like Sackey, is a former pupil at John Fisher, the Purley school which saw its first XV reach the semi-finals of the Daily Mail Cup national schools competition. Several of Warlingham's under-18s side played in that John Fisher side, while others, at Caterham School, reached the quarter-final of the Daily Mail Plate.

Tickets for the awards dinner, priced £40 to include a three-course meal and wine, are still available from Warlingham RFC, phone 01883 622825 or email warlingham.r.f.c@btconnect.com to book.

Warlingham’s regular car boot sales continue this Sunday, May 10, from 8am to 1pm. Entry is 20p per person, with free car parking for visitors. Vendors are charged £10 for cars; Vans/Trucks £15; Trailers £3.
