Out-of-contract Brentford midfielder David Hunt has revealed a League Two winners medal is going to be a key bargaining tool as a bids to secure a new deal for next season.

The 26-year-old joined the Bees in a short-term contract in the January transfer window and has played a key part during the promotion run-in when standing in for injured skipper Kevin O’Connor.

Boss Andy Scott has been impressed by the former Crystal Palace trainee’s form pointing out - after a slow start - he has helped maintain the quality of Brentford’s midfield in the captain’s absence.

Hunt had a disappointing start to the campaign at Shrewsbury Town making just three appearances as a substitute, before switching back south from the Midlands to be closer to his family.

And the long-throw specialist and combative midfielder is hoping the dream finish to his campaign can help secure a future at Griffin Park.

“It was a great experience for me personally and really nice to be a part of it,” he said.

“I started the year at Shrewsbury and things didn’t work out for me there, so to come back closer to home and go up with a winners medal is just perfect.

“To have a winners medal and not know where your future lies is a bit of a strange feeling. I’d like to stay at the club, but I’ll have to wait and see.

“I’m hoping I’ve done enough to show I’m worth a new deal.”

Hunt, whose video of scenes from inside the Bees dressing room after Saturday’s win featured on Sky Sports News, won promotion with Northampton Town earlier in his career.

And having photographed every minute of the side’s post-match celebrations, he says repeating the feat while lifting the title as well is an even better feeling.

“You’ve got to make the most of things because there are not many players with a winners medal in any league,” he added.

“Promotion at Northampton felt a bit different because I was involved for the whole season, but this is much better.”
