Mascot Matthew Helps proved lucky on Saturday as he saw his Sutton United favourites beat AFC Hornchurch 2-1 in their final Ryman Premier League game of the season on Saturday.
The victory, secured thanks to Steve Watts’ second-half penalty, means Sutton finish fifth in the table in Paul Doswell’s first season in charge and earned a place in the play-offs - at Hornchurch’s expense.
Matthew and his Sutton-supporting family (although brother William supports Arsenal) will be hoping for more of the same tonight when United visit Staines Town in their semi-final, with the winners facing Tonbridge Angels or Carshalton Athletic in Saturday’s final.
